![]() Keturah has experience as a page at the Iowa State Capitol, has volunteered extensive hours at the VA Hospital, and now works in the Dean’s Office for Health and Public Services at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC). Keturah’s mom, Kathy, is incredibly proud of all that Keturah has been able to accomplish. They had serious experience and got their hands dirty changing oil, replacing tires and working on an air conditioning unit. They were greeted with orange juice and Daylight Donuts, which made for a great start! Tom made time during the morning visit to have his mechanics work directly with the students. The shop is close to Camp Sunnyside and Tom put the business’s core values right in the name-Cheap, Humble, Reliable (CHR). It gives employers an opportunity to discuss their employment needs, what skills are needed to do these jobs, and ways to prepare to work in a related field.ĭuring the week focused on the automotive industry, Easterseals Iowa had the perfect pair-up with supporter Tom Gilbert and his shop CHR Tire and Auto in Des Moines (5485 NE 17th Street). This annual Summer Career Camp provides students with the opportunity to explore careers, build work readiness skills, interact with employers and tour local companies. This summer Easterseals Iowa clients were able to participate in Iowa Vocational Rehabilitation Services Summer program. The best way to find out if you like something is to try it! When you’re in high school and exploring what you like that could lead to employment, hands-on experience is crucial. Other states have patterned groups after the Iowa model but none have come close to matching the success and support of Iowa's Pony Express. No formal qualifications are needed to become a member of Pony Express - men, women, and children join in the common cause of helping children and adults with disabilities. The success spurred them to expand the ride throughout the state the following year. ![]() The first ride was held in NW Iowa and raised $12,000. Pony Express Riders of Iowa Founders Stub Johnson, Leo Gray, and Wayne Neilson had the idea to ride "Pony Express Style" county to county, not to carry mail but to carry money to help Iowa children and adults with disabilities. The event concludes with a victory dance to announce the year's grand total. April 15 for the big ride into Camp Sunnyside. Regional rides start throughout the state on April 14 and meet at the John Deere Ankeny plant at 2:30 p.m. The riders deliver the amount raised to Camp Sunnyside on Easter weekend.
